Does Volkswagen Still Make the Beetle?

Is there any vehicle as iconic as the Volkswagen Beetle? Originally called the Volkswagen Type 1, the Beetle was appealingly affordable and conveniently compact, attracting drivers around the world for good reason.

If you’re wondering if Volkswagen still makes the Beetle, the answer is no, unfortunately. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get behind the wheel of your own VW Beetle in Lithia Springs. Although we wish this legendary car was still in production, there’s always a chance that we might have a used one in stock here at Hoover Volkswagen of Lithia Springs.

The Volkswagen Beetle may have been discontinued, but it remains a timeless favorite for many drivers. Maybe Volkswagen will surprise us someday with a new take on the beloved Beetle, but for now, we can reminisce on this classic car together.

The Iconic Volkswagen Beetle: A Brief History

First introduced in the U.S. in 1949 by Ben Pon, a Dutch businessman, the Volkswagen Beetle’s beginning in America may not have seemed promising since Ben Pon had some difficulty in selling the first two vehicles. Though the car didn’t catch on right away in the U.S, the Beetle eventually gained traction and its popularity soared.

Worldwide, the Beetle became a best-seller, with the first generation selling 21.5 million cars. In the U.S., close to five million first-generation Beetles were sold. Since the Beetle’s first introduction in the U.S., three generations of Beetles have captured the hearts of drivers. Sadly, seven decades after its first introduction in the U.S., production ceased for the Volkswagen Beetle altogether.

The Final Volkswagen Beetle

2019 was the last model year of the iconic Beetle, and it’s been missed ever since production ended. Available in four trim levels and two body styles (coupe and convertible), this final edition was equipped with an abundance of outstanding features that enhanced the driving experience.

Designed with a 2.0-liter EA888 TSI® engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle delivered 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and offered decent fuel efficiency.

Seating materials varied across the lineup. The base trim, the S, came with cloth seats, the SE came with leatherette seating surfaces, the Final Edition SE came with rhombus cloth seating surfaces with leatherette inserts, and the top trim level, the Final Edition SEL, came with leather seating surfaces with diamond stitching.

Noteworthy features included the MIB II touchscreen infotainment system and a panoramic sunroof, which was included on all but the base trim. Standard safety and driver-assistance features like a rearview camera, an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, an Intelligent Crash Response System, a Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Traffic Alert offered additional peace of mind and protection.
